Traditional Chinese medicine offers a holistic approach to treating an illness. Traditional medicine focuses on the whole person, and will usually help the body fight disease or infection instead of trying to cure it directly. Typically traditional medicine has little side-effects. This is because it is based on precisely balanced formulas so that side-effects are minimized (e.g. if you wanted the anti-bacterial effects of cinnamon without the blood-thinning properties, you would add licorice, which has a blood thickening affect).
Western medicine can be more effective because it uses medicines that attack the symptoms, not the problem as a whole. For viruses which cause colds, you have fever reducers and anti-biotics. In addition to “pills,” western medicine has made many advances in surgical technology..
Studying acupuncture

you have to be at least 20 years old to get admission to college.
you need to have at least an associates degree in any subject.
The time to complete the degree can vary from 3-5 years depending on how you opt to take your courses time wise.
After 3-5 years will get you your “Masters of science in oriental medicine” .Then depending on which state you live and the state regulations, you can either become an MDOR (medical doctor of oriental medicine) or L.Ac. (Licensed acupuncturist).
Chinese medical degrees
In Chinese medicine, there are three majors – Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Acupuncture, and herbs. In China, it will take 5 years to get a B.S. degree . After you get the B.S. degree, you can pass the national license exam and then practice Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Three treasures
Traditional Chinese Medicine emphasizes that we should nurture and protect the “Three Treasures” called; Jing, Qi, and Shen.
Jing- which is our primal power determines our fundamental life force and how long we live.
Qi – is our day to day vitality and our protective energy-it determines how we adapt to the world around us and how well we function.
Shen – is our spirit, our state of psychological well-being and our spiritual experience.
When we nurture and protect these three we assure ourselves health, happiness and a long life.
